One of the great things about having a pair of kettlebells in the house and knowing how to use them… is the ability to get in a great workout while doing something as mundane as cooking breakfast.

Here’s a simple recipe that rids the world of unborn chickens and tastes like victory:

  1. Turn on the coffee maker
  2. 5 Double KB Push Presses+ 5 Front Squats+ 5 Push Presses.
  3. Put the coffee on
  4. 5 Double KB Push Presses+ 5 Front Squats+ 5 Push Presses.
  5. Heat up the skillet.
  6. 5 Double KB Push Presses+ 5 Front Squats+ 5 Push Presses.
  7. Put eggs in the skillet.
  8. 5 Double KB Push Presses+ 5 Front Squats+ 5 Push Presses.
  9. Check the eggs, wait a bit then Cover the skillet.
  10. 5 Double KB Push Presses+ 5 Front Squats+ 5 Push Presses.
  11. Eat eggs.
  12. Drink Coffee.

I chose squats and push-presses because
A) They are two techniques I need to improve B) They wake me up fast C) They work a ton of muscle

If you’re going to give this workout a shot, I recommend learning how to perform the Clean, Push Press & Front Squat from a level II StrongFirst instructor like myself and using a pair of bells you can push press with excellent form for at least 10 reps.

Push Press Tips:

  • Dip Deep: Dip deep enough before each push press so your legs feel like loaded springs, full of stored energy.
  • Brace With Your Abs: Brace hard with your abs as you lockout. Don’t make the amateur mistake of relaxing your abs when you need them the most to protect your low back.
  • Squeeze the Lockout:  Don’t be passive at the top. With the bells locked out overhead take a moment to squeeze a few more ounces of strength your quads, glutes, abs before dropping the bells back into the rack.
Relax Your Grip During the Dip and Drive : Don’t crush grip the handles during dip, drive or catch phase of the push press, this will add unnecessary tension to your biceps that can turn an exercise that is supposed to be fast and powerful into a slower grind.
